Turkish channel: Albania hosts the MEK which is one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations
A report published by the Turkish channel TRT World, which broadcasts in the English language (TRT World), said that Albania hosts the MEK organization of Iran, which is considered one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations, noting that "this organization will make from Albania a front in the proxy battle between Iran and the United States." ".
The report, translated by Ashraf News, stated that "the decision of the Albanian authorities, under American pressure, to host this group (the Mujahideen Khalq), which is classified as a terrorist organization in Iran, angered the Iranian authorities."
In 2014, under US pressure, Albania welcomed more than 4,000 members of the People's Mujahideen of Iran, a secret group formerly based in Iraq.
"Albania hosts one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations on behalf of the United States," said Dr. Olsi Jazexhi, an academic and expert on Albanian affairs who monitors the activities of the MEK in his country.
"The Americans imposed MEK on Albania, and since Albania is a very fragile state, they had to accept it, and the same thing was done by Prime Minister Edi Rama, who is still hosting the MEK in Albania," said Jazexhi.
The MEK is considered a terrorist organization by Iran, and it was listed as a terrorist organization by the US State Department until 2012.
The administration of former US President Barack Obama reclassified the group and formalized a relationship that the United States was secretly sponsoring, to protect the group in Iraq at a US military base.
"The reason for bringing the MEK to Albania is the general ignorance of Albanian politicians who do not understand the threat of international terrorism and the implications of this terrorism on the national states," he added.
The Turkish channel report stated that "the MEK is a militant political organization that supports an extraordinary mixture of Marxist and Islamic ideology, and has been accused of killing American soldiers, bombing American companies and targeting innocent Iranian civilians during a terrorist campaign over several decades."
A report issued by the US media outlet NBC News indicated that the group was funded by Israeli intelligence and was behind a series of assassinations that targeted Iranian nuclear scientists between 2007 and 2015.
Sayed Muhammad Marandi, a professor of English literature and orientalism at Tehran University, said, "The MEK is deeply despised in Iran. They fought for Saddam Hussein against Iran for eight years. Then they spied for the Americans and the Israelis, they are mercenaries and a cult group."
Former MEK members spoke of the organization's oppressive cult-like rules, including marriages that the leadership must arrange.
There were reports that the organization sometimes asked its followers for a mass divorce and detained and killed members criticizin the belief of Maryam Rajavi, the current head of the MEK.
“Nobody in Iran has any sympathy or respect for them (the MEK), they are traitors to the country, they are tools of Western powers. Thousands of them are working as an army on the Internet in Albania,” said Syed Muhammad Marandi.
Earlier this year, The Intercept, an online investigative publication, reported how the MEK created a fake online figure called Heshmat Alawi in order to spread propaganda against the Iranian government, including the call for regime change.
The so-called Alawi writer was partly run from Albania and had fooled many American publications that published the fake character's writing.
“By using various aliases on the Internet, on Facebook as well as Twitter, they were able to create a digital army,” Marandi says, adding: “These social platforms do not prevent their activities because they are carried out in coordination with the United States government and they also carry out espionage activities in Iran.”
Albania is the most dangerous country in the world
“Albania has become the most dangerous country in the world for Iran after the United States and Israel,” says Jazexhi.
While the United States and Israel are locked in open conflict with Iran, Albania, by hosting the MEK, has become a major center of anti-Iranian propaganda in the world.
The MEK does not lack strong friends in Washington, and particularly has close ties to the hard-line Trump administration, and in 2017 the group paid National Security Adviser John Bolton and Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani to deliver a speech.
Jazexhi added that "with strong friends like these, Albanian politicians do not dare to do anything even though the majority of Albanians are terrified of what the government is doing," indicating that"the MEK may also work against the Albanian penal code."
“The Albanian Penal Code states very clearly that if a person or group of people incites to fight against a foreign country or incites people or asks them to participate in a conflict in a foreign country, they can be persecuted because of that,” said Jazexhi.
The actions of the MEK in a poor country like Albania, which is still struggling to emerge from a communist dictatorship, does not bode well for its long-term stability or the rule of law.
“When you host terrorists and help them, you should be afraid of suffering the consequences,” says Marandi. “These are not ordinary people. The Albanian government is foolish to cooperate in this way with the Americans.”
“The MEK, with its paramilitary camps located in Manez, Albania created a state within a state,” says Jazexhi.
As tensions between Iran and the United States continue to heat up the MEK's role in Albania may make another country also a theater of conflict.MEKPMOIMKOMujahideenAlbaniaMassoud RajaviMaryam Rajavi
